- Ewell Blackwell a graduate of Bonita high school Blackwell was one of the greatest MLB pitchers of the World War II era. A right-hander Blackwell holds a modest career record of just 82-78, however, his career ERA 3.30 suggests he was a much better pitcher than his record would indicate. Blackwell had the best year of his career in 1947 recording a 22-7 record. Blackwell stood at 6’6 and played the last several years of his career (1949-1955) with one kidney after it was removed due to an infection.
- Glenn “Mr. Outside” Davis one of the most famous college football players of all time, Davis was also an alum of Bonita high school and went on to star with Army during the 1940s. A 3-time All-American, Maxwell Award Walter Camp Award and the most coveted college football trophy of all, the Heisman. Prior to his time at West Point, Davis led the La Verne Bearcats football team to an 11-0 record and the school’s first championship in 1942. Davis who died in 2005 at the age of 80 is still held in high esteem among sports fans and writers alike three quarters of a century after the high point of his career.
- Sugar Shane Mosley perhaps the most famous of all on this list of the one time heavyweight champion of the world currently resides in La Verne and was born in nearby Pomona. Regarded as one of the greatest fighters ever Mosley has held titles at three different weight classes throughout his career. Notable opponents whom he defeated include Oscar De La Hoya (twice) Antonio Margarito and Fernando Vargas. He was the 1998 fighter of the year and is a member of the Boxing Hall of Fame.
